First, fill out a brief application form. A core member will then contact you to arrange an interview, at which you will present your work to a small group of core members. Artists are asked to bring at least five examples of their work to show at the interview, including at least one original. In addition, we ask artists to be prepared to leave two or three photos/color copies with us for our curator's file. Once accepted, you will be asked to pay the $60 annual membership fee.
What is Required Of The Member?
Member artists price their own work. Most of the art sold at CITY ART falls within the $100 to $1200 price range. However, CITY ART does sell art costing considerably more and significantly less. Member artists should get some feedback from core members to determine whether their art is appropriately priced. Exhibiting artists are responsible for insuring their own art or assuming the liability.
Exhibiting member artists are required to work two gallery shifts per month during any month their work is exhibited. Each shift consists of four and one-half hours of gallery-sitting, and provides the opportunity to make 10 percent commission on art sold during those hours - in addition to the 70 percent they make if they sell one of their own pieces.
Exhibiting artists must attend one potluck meeting to plan the exhibit opening and other events related to that month's shows. Unless otherwise informed, the potluck meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of every month from 7 to 9 p.m.
All artists are welcome to attend the potluck meeting. These meetings are the best time to sign up for wall space for upcoming shows or to simply get a feel for how the gallery works.
Exhibiting in the Front Room
Running a gallery is expensive. If an individual artist attempted to open a gallery in San Francisco to show his or her artwork, it would cost thousands of dollars each month for rent, gallery operations, utilities, and hiring help. Member artists effectively get the same results for a fraction of the cost by renting wall space at CITY ART, and don't have the headaches of running their own gallery business.
CITY ART pays its rent and operating costs, while providing public relations and marketing support, by renting wall space to member artists on a monthly basis. Front room spaces cost between $60 and $150 per month, depending on their size and location. The average wall space runs five feet in width, floor to ceiling. CITY ART also offers floor, window, and display case space. For details on prices of particular spaces, ask a core member.
Sign up for front room spaces is on a first-come, first-served basis at the gallery's potluck meetings. Payment for space is required at the time of signup. There is usually a waiting period for front room spaces, but back room spaces are generally available within a month or two. It is the artist's responsibility to sign up for his or her two gallery shifts during the exhibiting month.
Artists must have all required paperwork (including their contract and hanging checklist) on file at the gallery by the Tuesday before the hanging. When hanging art, absolutely no clip frames are allowed. Works on paper to be hung on the walls must be framed. All prints should be clearly labeled as to type of print.
Exhibiting in the Back Room
Back room shows generally spotlight "New at City Art": pieces appearing for the first time and artists showing for the first time at CITY ART. Some back room shows are organized around particular themes.
The cost for exhibiting in a back room show depends on the length of the longest side of the completed work of art (including framing, when relevant): the cost is $1 per inch. Please note that we make special price accommodations for large or unusually shaped work; please see the back room curator for details.
As with front room shows, artists exhibiting in the back room must work two gallery shifts during the months they exhibit. If a member artist has never exhibited before, CITY ART recommends he or she begin by participating in aback room show to get a feel for the gallery and the business of showing art.
All artists must become members to exhibit in the front or back rooms.
